Augs: tells and when to shoot

How to know a customer is an Aug before you shoot, and what happens if you are wrong or you miss.

Steps, in order

Site narration

Read the Identification Guide

Mentor's Note: The Augmented — Augs are humans overtaken by a rogue AI inside a brain implant. No safe removal without killing the host. They kidnap to install more implants. Shopkeepers are the first line of defense (raw materials + medical supplies). They may use overly formal phrasing or robotic vocabulary. Shoot only if absolutely certain. Do not call Security: Augs have hacked their comms and will flee.

Augmented Identification Guide — Visual Features: Unusual Pupils; Uncanny Expression; Visible Aug Chip.

Non-Visual Features: Unnatural Stillness; Twitching; Outfit Not Matching Their Faction; Robotic vocabulary; Overly Formal Phrasing.

Confirm (scanner or multiple tells)

Aug Scanner confirms a suspected Aug with 100% accuracy. Flavour: energy-hungry EMF detector tuned to the augmentation chip.

A playthrough used twitching + outfit-vs-faction from the in-game guide, accidentally shot, and Security confirmed the customer was an Aug. Another playthrough stresses missing an Aug.

Optional: trade first

Tip video: correctly shooting an Aug rewards Security reputation and credits; credit amount typically increases with how many you have shot. Look at pupils, chip in the head, violent shaking, clothes vs the faction tag above the dialogue box, suspicious lines. You can still buy/sell and haggle without reputation loss before shooting.

Tips video: they often speak in unique-request phrasing; sell them goods first, then shoot for more money. Speaker recommends not ramping the price (unverified) and leaving them some money so they do not auto-leave.

Bargain UI Threaten (Aug): accuse the customer of being an Aug and threaten to shoot, demanding better prices. On a normal customer the accusation always fails and you lose reputation.

Shoot only if certain

An Aug has been eliminated thanks to your assistance.

Night log: a contact informs you an Aug visited yesterday (left alive).

Game-over: Aug population critical; Augs break in at night, forcibly install a chip; Security never arrived; you are a passenger in your own body.

Where it goes wrong

Site narration

  • Wrong shot / wrong Threaten (Aug) hits reputation; accusation on a human always fails.
  • Do not call Security — Mentor note says comms are hacked and the Aug flees.
  • Letting Augs walk has a night-log and a game-over if the population goes critical.

Still open

Site narration

  • A printed table gives the credits per Aug kill; the interface column itself is blank, and one speaker says the amount rises with the count.
  • Whether haggling with Augs is always reputation-safe (one speaker).
  • The English night log says the Aug visit is today; the Chinese night log says tomorrow.
